Informing my design is the story of my Grandmother, and Great Grandmothers history of travel and migration, most specifically from their home in Natal, South Africa to Canberra, Australia.
Canberra and Natal are approximately 10,400 kilometers apart with Canberra sitting roughly 4 degrees lower in latitude. My grandmother told me that it helped that Canberra and Natal very close in terms of latitudes, meaning the climate and landscape were not too dissimilar, however it was the small objects, trinkets and keepsakes from South Africa that made the shift bearable until she could truly call Australia home.
This lead me to reflect upon my own habits, of keeping small object, ticket stubs and pieces of rubbish that hold
the meaning, and capture the time in which I found them. The more I asked the more common I found this habit to be, albeit to varying degree’s. From this understanding of a universal human experience, I decided to create a
box in which these objects could be kept safe. with a unique closure system not immediately obvious.
